François Le Gall

Program Coordinator, Agriculture and Rural Development, Africa Region

World Bank

François Le Gall is the Program Coordinator of the Agriculture and Rural Development Unit of the Africa Region at the World Bank. His main responsibilities include overseeing the Agriculture and Rural Development portfolio of 20 countries in West and Central Africa. He is also the Lead Livestock Specialist of the Africa Region and the contact person of the institution on Global Animal Health issues.  François Le Gall joined the Bank in 1993.  He is a Veterinarian by training.

 

 

Guo Li

Co-chair, Land and Administration Thematic Group & Senior Agricultural Economist

World Bank

Guo Li is a Senior Agricultural Economist in the Rural Development, Natural Resources and Environment Sector Unit of East Asia Region.  Since joining the World Bank in 1999, he has participated in and managed operational projects and analytical and advisory activities, focusing on poverty reduction in China and Mongolia, land titling and administration in Southeast Asian countries, and land policy dialogues in China.  Guo Li is the Co-chair of the World Bank’s land thematic group.  He holds a Ph.D. in applied economics from Stanford University and a Masters in comparative economic systems from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

 

Barry Lowenkron

Vice President, Program on Global Security & Sustainability

MacArthur Foundation

Barry Lowenkron is Vice President of the Program on Global Security & Sustainability, directing the Foundation's international grantmaking.  Before joining MacArthur in September 2007, he was Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, representing the President and the Secretary of State abroad as well as before the U.S. Congress, the press and the public. In earlier posts spanning five Administrations, Lowenkron worked on a range on international issues across a number of federal agencies. Mr. Lowenkron received his M.A. with distinction in 1977 from the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

 

Kathy Mackinnon

Lead Biodiversity Specialist, Environment Department

World Bank

Kathy works on the World Bank’s Biodiversity, Protected Areas, and Forestry portfolios, policies, programs and projects, including technical review of Bank biodiversity projects funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF).  She has worked extensively with international conservation NGOs, especially IUCN and WWF and government agencies in developing countries. Kathy is also Co-Chair the IUCN/World Commission Task Force on Science, Research and Management of Protected Areas, particularly focusing on protected area management effectiveness. Numerous publications include nine scientific and popular books and more than 100 published papers in scientific books and journals. She graduated from Oxford (B.A. Zoology, M.A., D.Phil.) and has extensive field experience, especially in Asia and Indonesia, on tropical ecology research, conservation and protected area planning and management.

 


John Nittler

Senior Vice President, Latin America and the Caribbean

Chemonics International, Inc.

John Nittler is Senior Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean and supervises a large and diverse portfolio of development projects in 14 countries throughout the region. Mr. Nittler is an experienced manager with over 30 years of working in international development. With expertise in natural resource policy, forest and watershed management, and institutional strengthening, he is skilled in the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of integrated rural development projects at the field and national levels.  John has over 20 years of field experience having held long term assignments in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Bolivia, Somalia and The Gambia. He has a Masters degree in Forestry from Yale University.

 

 

Thomas Pomeroy

Tom Pomeroy is currently a private consultant concentrating on policy and agribusiness programs in Africa and the Middle East since retiring from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2006, where he most recently served as Division Director of USDA’s bilateral trade policy division for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. He served overseas for 17 years as USDA’s main representative in US Embassies in Egypt, India, Nigeria, Tunisia, and as an Attaché in Brussels.  His overseas work includes several very successful initiatives on business development and policy reform programs and began his work with USDA as one of two co-architects of a multi-billion dollar export credit guarantee program.  Previous to USDA, Tom worked as an international economist at the US International Trade Commission. He holds an MBA in International Business.

 

 

Dr. Jolyne Sanjak

Managing Director, Implementation Support

Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)

Dr. Sanjak is the Managing Director for Implementation Support in the Department of Compact Implementation. She leads teams covering a range of topics such as agriculture, land tenure, finance, private sector development, and monitoring and evaluation.  Previously, she served as Senior Director for Property Rights and Land Policy. Dr. Sanjak has close to 20 years of experience related to land tenure, property registration, and land markets as well as to broader themes related to rural development and economic growth.  She holds Ph. D. in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin and a MS in agricultural economics with a specialization in natural resource management from Penn State University. 

 

 

Mirjam Schöning

Senior Director

Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship

Mirjam Schöning heads the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. She has been with the Foundation since its inception in August 2000. The Foundation’s mission is to raise the awareness on social entrepreneurship as a key element to advance societies and address social problems in an innovative and effective manner. Previously, she worked as a consultant at Bain & Company, at the World Bank, and Shell in Scandinavia. Mirjam graduated with a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School and holds a Master in Business Administration from the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland. Her fields of expertise include social entrepreneurship, microfinance and social investing.

 

 

Laurence R. Simon

Professor

Brandeis University

Laurence R. Simon is Professor of International Development at Brandeis University and directs its Center for International Development and the Sustainable Development Graduate Programs.  He launched Oxfam America’s work in Central America and the Caribbean and served as its first director of policy analysis.  He founded and was president of the American Jewish World Service; was a strategic planner to a World Bank/UNDP poverty alleviation project in Sri Lanka; and a senior advisor to the start-up of Google.org.  He is a specialist in post-harvest losses and land reform and worked extensively in Central America, southern and eastern Africa and South Asia.   He has a Ph.D. from the School of Geography at Clark University.

 

 

Ian Thorpe (2006 Global Development Marketplace Winner)

Pump Aid

Ian was a co-founder of Pump Aid and has led the organization through rapid growth. Over one million people in Zimbabwe and neighboring countries now have access to clean water, basic sanitation and improved food security. He won the St. Andrews Environment Prize and Medal twice on behalf of Pump Aid for the Elephant Pump in 2005 and the Elephant Toilet in 2008 and was a winner in the 2006 Global Development Marketplace competition. His research has focused on the cultural considerations of development and he speaks fluent Shona. He launched the brands Ethical Goods and Thirsty Planet (which raised over a million dollars in the first year), and he will soon launch Elephant Toilet Tissue to raise money for sanitation in Africa.

 

Brian Trelstad

Chief Investment Officer

Acumen Fund

Brian Trelstad is the Chief Investment Officer of Acumen Fund, a $35 million social investment fund with investments in health, water, housing and energy in South Asia and East Africa. Previously, Brian spent four years at McKinsey & Company as a consultant in the healthcare and non-profit practices. Prior to McKinsey, he worked as a case writer at Stanford University's Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and advised early-stage technology companies. He was the lead environmental staffer for President Clinton's AmeriCorps program, and co-founded and directed the Center for Environmental Citizenship. Brian holds an MBA from Stanford University, an MA in City Planning from UC-Berkeley and a BA from Harvard University.

 

 

Juergen Voegele (Jury Chair)

Director, Agriculture and Rural Development

World Bank

Juergen Voegele is the Director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department at the World Bank.  Mr. Voegele joined the World Bank in 1991 and has held a number of assignments, including Head of the Agriculture Unit in China and Manager of the Agriculture and Rural Development Unit in Europe and Central Asia.  In February 2008, Mr. Voegele was appointed Director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of the World Bank, where he chairs the Agriculture and Rural Sector Board, and oversees World Bank global programs for rural poverty alleviation, agriculture and natural resources management.

 


Zhihong Zhang

Cluster Coordinator, Climate Change Mitigation

Global Environment Facility (GEF)

Zhihong Zhang is Cluster Coordinator and Senior Program Manager for Climate Change Mitigation at the Global Environment Facility.  His responsibilities include development and implementation of GEF climate change strategies and management of the GEF climate change portfolio.  Before joining the GEF Secretariat in 2004, he served as Chief Technical Advisor on behalf of UNIDO to implement GEF-funded energy efficiency projects in China.  From 1992 to 1994, he worked in the energy sector at the World Bank on rural energy and energy efficiency policies and projects.  He holds a Ph.D. in Energy Management and Policy from the University of Pennsylvania.
