WASHINGTON, June 4, 2003—The following project was approved yesterday by the World Bank’s Board:
CREDIT AMOUNT: IDA—US$ 24 million
TERMS: Grace period = 10 years; Maturity = 40 years
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project objective is to increase both the quantity and the useful life of the available resources within the Sana'a basin in Yemen and to increase the efficiency of agricultural use allowing for a gradual shift to a less water-based rural economy through water conservation. This will be done by introducing farmers to modern irrigation and improved equipment and methods; changing pumping and water use behavior through a comprehensive public awareness campaign that would touch all segments of the basin population; saving precipitation run-off from evaporation; systematic monitoring of the basin's hydraulic situation for improved water management. In addition the project will assist in building an institutional base for central and local water basin management, including water regulation and enforcement and planning and water allocation, that may be replicated in other basins.
