The     Government of China together with the  European Commission and the World Bank co-sponsored an International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Influenza in Beijing on 17-18 January, 2006. The conference assessed the financing needs at the country, regional and global levels. During this event the international community pledged US$1.9billion in financial support and discussed coordination mechanisms. The Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing had issued, on behalf of the conference sponsors, invitations to countries and international organizations concerned.
