During a recent event at the World Bank, Chad Dobson (Executive Director) of the Bank Information Center, and Alnoor Ebrahim (Associate Professor) of Harvard Business School provide comments on World Bank - Civil Society Relations. The event was the launch of the World Bank-Civil Society Engagement Review of Fiscal Years 2007 to 2009. While acknowledging that the Bank has made important advances in its collaboration with the civil society over the past three years, both Chad and Alnoor made recommendations on how to improve the quality and consistency of this engagement.  What's New! |  | World Bank to Provide an Additional $100 Million Grant to Haiti Following Earthquake and Working to Cancel Haitian Debt: In response to the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that caused extensive damage and casualties in Haiti on January 12, the World Bank announced subject, to Board approval, an additional $100 million in emergency grant funding to support recovery and reconstruction in the Caribbean nation. In addition, the Bank is waiving any payments on Haiti's debt of $38 million (which represents 4% of Haiti's debt stock) for the next five years and will seek ways to cancel this debt.  More...  |  | Haiti Relief Donations from World Bank Staff Channeled Through CSOs: Bank staff have raised $310,000 for earthquake relief in Haiti and this was matched 50% by Bank management for a total of $465,000. These funds will be provided to the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders who are providing emergency medical, food, and shelter services in Port-au-Prince. For more information and to apply visit…  |  | 2009 AMs Civil Society Policy Forum Attracts Record CSO Participation: Civil society participation at the 2009 World Bank – IMF Annual Meetings in Istanbul, Turkey was the largest and most intense ever. Over 1,000 CSO representatives were accredited and nearly 500 attended the 6-day 50 policy dialogue sessions on topics ranging from the global economic crisis and information disclosure, to climate change. The highlight of the event was a Townhall Meeting with Bank and Fund Principals Messrs. Zoellick and Strauss-Kahn, moderated by Archbishop Ndungane.  More...Â
