MIGA’s Proposed New Disclosure and
Social and Environmental Sustainability Policies

April 13, 2007

MIGA representatives (Frank Lysy, Director Economics and Policy; Moina Varkie, Director Outreach and Partnerships; Judith Pearce, Lead Operations Officer and Jill Shankleman, Senior Environmental and Social Specialist) met with NGOs and other stakeholders on April 13th, 2007 to discuss MIGA's proposed new Disclosure and Environmental and Sustainability policies. The new policies were made available on MIGA's website in February and through an email to a wide range of NGOs, CSOs and other stakeholders.

In general, NGOs welcomed the new policies as an improvement on MIGA’s current ones. Some of the issues discussed at the Friday meeting included the nature and timing of project disclosure; consultations by clients with local communities; the monitoring and evaluation of MIGA projects; and the implementation of human rights and labor standards in MIGA-supported projects. MIGA staff explained the proposed new approach on these issues. Some NGOs agreed to provide written comments on the draft policies before the deadline at the end of April. NGOs and CSOs that were unable to attend the meeting in Washington are encouraged to visit MIGA's website to provide their comments.
