The Strategy stresses improvements in three key areas:
-
Strengthening analytical and advisory activities. Systematic environmental studies—such as country-level diagnostic studies and strategic environmental assessments—will help consider environmental issues at earlier stages of the decisionmaking process, as well as integrate them into the policy dialogue, and the poverty reduction and country assistance strategies. We will help build capacity, transfer experience, and promote good practice in technical and policy issues.
-
Integrating environment into project and program design. We will help our clients address priority environmental concerns through projects and project components, and will monitor the impact and sustainability of our projects and programs. When feasible, we will apply programmatic approaches to support long-term environmental programs and reform.
-
Improving the safeguard system. We will enhance the quality and consistency of compliance with policies, integrate social and environmental safeguard systems, build client capacity in environmental assessments and management, and respond to new approaches to development assistance.
