Global Environmental Management

The global environmental issues surrounding climate change, ozone depletion, and the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants require cooperation and coordinated action on a global level. The World Bank is helping our clients meet their present and future obligations under the international agreements associated with these issues.

The World Bank is exploring innovative ways to help countries efficiently achieve the goals of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in ways that promote economic development. The Bank believes that our clients can benefit from the global efforts to reduce greenhouse house emissions.

The Bank is also one of the four implementing agencies of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol. We work with local governments and financial agency partners to enable ozone depleting substances (ODS) phase-out activities in client countries.

Building on the lessons learned from the Montreal Protocol, the World Bank is working with our clients to develop alternatives to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), in compliance with the 2001 Stockholm Convention on POPs. We are working with countries to help them better understand the Convention’s obligations, the present status of POPs within their borders, and to identify capacity-building and enabling activities that will help them address the issue.

More detailed information on World Bank activities focusing on Climate Change, Montreal Protocol, and POPs is available through the links in the box on the right.
