World Bank Partnership on Combatting Desertification

The World Bank Partnership for Combating Desertification is financed to create enabling environments to implement the Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD) in developing countries affected by desertification.

The partnership supports the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Global Mechanism
, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, sub-regional organizations, and countries in their activities to combat desertification.

Specific partnership activities include:

  • development and undertaking of awareness and advocacy actions in the context of the CCD
  • establishment, operation, and maintenance of the Financial Information Engine on Land Degradation (FIELD) system for searching, collecting, and disseminating financial information related to land degradation
  • resource mobilization from bilateral donors, the UN system, multilateral financial institutions, regional and sub-regional financial mechanisms, and non-governmental organizations, foundations and other private sector entities; and making these available to affected countries
  • National Action Programming (NAPs) in affected countries to finance actions designed to combat desertification and/or mitigate the effects of drought
  • support of community based activities that will lead to effective measures aimed at combating land degradation.
