Abstract
The main objectives of this paper are:

1) Identify critical gender issues related to women’s economic and governance roles in both rural and urban areas, for the development of the WBG's
 2010 Environment Strategy.

2) Review best practices and lessons learned from WBG activities which have linked gender and environmental mainstreaming and maximized environmental sustainability. Part of this discussion will review the internal and external challenges with harmonizing gender and environmental mainstreaming in dedicated and sectoral projects.

3) Identify how the new strategy can harmonize its priorities and actions with the social dimensions of the 2001 Environment Strategy, the Gender Strategy/Action Plan, the gender-related commitments and initiatives of WBG senior leadership.
