Biodiversity and Environmental Toolkit

It is now more vital than ever that natural habitats are systematically assessed and evaluated as part of cost and benefit analysis of development programs and projects. There is an increasingly urgent need for environmental assessment to be used to prevent the degradation and over-exploitation of biodiversity. The World Bank has produced a Toolkit (see panel on right) the objectives of which are:

• to inform environmental assessment practitioners, project managers, executing agencies and other project stakeholders about the costs and benefits of effective treatment of biodiversity in project design, acceptance and long-term sustainability;
  
  
• to outline pragmatic and cost-effective approaches and methods to achieve effective treatment of biodiversity in environmental assessment.
