Donors and project managers face a number of unique challenges in increasing stakeholder participation in the design and management of protected area projects. Some of these challenges relate directly to projects (conservation incentives, scaling-up, and working across borders) and to the political environment in which projects take place (tenure issues and governance).
The following topics describe some of the major challenges, experiences, and lessons from current practice in participatory conservation:
- Innovations in Scaling-Up Participatory Conservation
- Experiences with Linking Participatory Conservation to Governance
- Buying Constituents for Conservation

To promote and improve practices in participatory conservation requires learning from the diverse experiences of those who put participatory conservation into practice. To identify and disseminate useful lessons and practical experience relating to each of these topics, the World Bank hosted several roundtables and an e-discussion on participatory conservation from December 2001 - February 2002. These 'participatory conservation conversations' included experts from within and outside the World Bank.
