Fisheries and aquaculture are important components of sustainable coastal and marine management.  A key concern in recent years has been overexploitation of marine ecosystems, especially overfishing and pollution. With regard to fisheries, the biomass of fish targeted has declined by about 90 percent since the onset of industrial fishing and in extreme cases fisheries have completely collapsed as a result of overfishing. To fight this disturbing trend the World Bank, in partnership with other international organizations, is working to develop strategies for sustainable fisheries in developing countries.
The World Bank has established a Global Program on Sustainable Fisheries: "PROFISH" in association with key donors and stakeholders to meet the challenge of the growing crisis in the world’s marine fisheries and the impact of the crisis on poor people in coastal- and fisheries communities around the world.
Below are several links to resources that address sustainable fisheries and aquaculture projects, initiatives and research.
