Completed Projects

Costa Rica: Ecomarkets Project (implemented 2001-2006). Supported the development of the national PES program.

Colombia/Costa Rica/Nicaragua: Regional Integrated Silvopastoral Ecosystem Management Project (implemented 2002 - 2008). Piloted PES to promote adoption of silvopastoral practices in degraded pastures.

Kenya: Agricultural Productivity and Sustainable Land Management. Will develop pilot PES mechanism with Nairobi Water Co. to protect water treatment plant.

Projects under implementation

South Africa: Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation and Development Project (effective 2003). Separate but coordinated projects that include a PES pilot.

Lesotho: Maloti-Drakensberg Transfortier Conservation and Development Project (effective 2003). Separate but coordinated projects that include a PES pilot.

South Africa: Cape Action Plan for the Environment (CAPE) (Effective 2004). Uses PES to encourage conservation in the Cape Floristic Region.

Mexico: Environmental Services Project (effective 2006). Will consolidate and ensure long-term financial sustainability of country's PES program.

Costa Rica: Mainstreaming Market-based Instruments for Environmental Management Project (approved 2006, pending approval by Costa Rica's National Assembly). Will consolidate and ensure long-term financial sustainability of country's PES program.

Kenya: Natural Resources Management Project (approved 2006). Will explore the potential for PES mechanisms to contribute to improve water and forest resource management.

Panama: Rural Productivity and Consolidation of Mesoamerican Biological Corridor" Includes pilot PES program for local communities and specific watersheds.

Ecuador: Chimborazo Natural Resources Management Project. Will help develop local PES mechanisms to protect watersheds important for water supply in Chimborazo province

Projects under preparation (projects are linked to the project portal as they become available)

Brazil: Espirito Santo Biodiversity and Watershed Conservation and Restoration Project. Will use PES as part of package of measures to improve watershed management

Colombia: Mainstreaming Sustainable Cattle Ranching Project. Will use PES to induce the adoption of silvopastoral practices in areas under extensive ranching, scaling up lessons from the Silvopastoral Project.

Mexico: Guerrero Decentralized Rural Transport for Territorial Development Loan Project. Will help develop local PES mechanisms to protect watersheds important for water supply in Guerrero State
