The poor depend on the environment in multiple ways. In many parts of the developing world, the health and productivity of the poor depend on environmental quality. Natural resources also contribute to non-cash sources of income. In times of distress or when faced with weather or economic disasters, the poor often rely natural assets for buffering shocks.
