Structural Adjustment

Sectoral Structural Adjustment Loans (SECALs) and Sectoral Structural Adjustment Credits (SECACs) are submitted to Operational Policy/Bank Procedure 4.01 and thus undergo Environmental Screening  for their potential environmental and social impacts. For those categorized as A, B, or FI, an environmental assessment report needs to be prepared and disclosed in the project country and through the World Bank Infoshop . For a category A project, a summary of the Environmental Assessment report also needs to be sent to the Bank's Board of Directors as soon as it is received by the Region.

For macro-economic Structural Adjustment loans and credits, Operational Policy/Bank Procedure 4.01 does not apply and we recommend following the good practice advice of  World Bank Operational Directive 8.60 (being converted into Operational Policy/Bank Procedure 8.60) on Structural Adjustment, and an analysis should be done to determine the most pressing environmental issue, assess countries' environmental management capacity and suggest ways and means to improve it.
