As of July 2005, GEF Council or CEO has approved over 420 projects implemented by the World Bank Group with a total GEF grant amount of over $ 2.8 billion that are associated with an additional US$13.8 billion in co-financing.
Most full-sized projects are in the climate change (39%) and biodiversity (35%) focal areas. International waters projects represented 14% of the portfolio, an steady growth from 10% in FY00. The share of projects in the multi-focal area was 6% and the share of ozone depletion projects 5%. Land degradation and Persistent Organic Pollutnants (POPs)projects began to enter the portfolio (less than 1% each). The medium-sized portfolio was also dominated by biodiversity projects with a few land degradation projects having been approved.
The World Bank Group GEF portfolio includes projects directly managed by the Bank, as well as those managed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Executing Agencies for these projects include the regional development bank, governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
