Agricultural Trade Themes

One of the key achievements of the Agreement on Agriculture (146 Kb PDF)  has been the development and implementation of a framework to address barriers and distortions to trade in three major policy areas: Domestic Subsidies, Export Subsidies, and Market Access-- also referred to as the three pillars of agricultural trade negotiation.

During the Doha Ministerial Conference of 2001 new trade issues emerged from the large number of proposals submitted by 121 governments. Among these were Special and Differential Treatment and non-trade concerns such as Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards, Environmental Standards, Poverty and Rural Development, and Food Security.
