Livestock services include a wide range of functions needed to ensure the productivity and sustainability of livestock production systems.
A first group of production services include credit, breeding services, productivity research, training, and extensionoften relating to breeding, agro-processing, input provision and efficient use of animal and feed and fodder resources.
A second group of services relate to animal health services (veterinary research, diagnosis, clinical services, vaccine and other veterinary product production and distribution, quality control of veterinary products, vaccinations, vector control, disease surveillance, quarantine). These services are linked to animal health products with a market has a value of over US $25 billion annually and to work of two million professional veterinarians employed worldwide.
A third group of related services involve quality control over animal health and livestock processing to ensure human health and safety (i.e., food hygiene and inspection).
And a fourth, group of services relate to animal welfare and prevention of cruelty to animals. Many of these services involve some element of public good, but experience shows that generally service delivery by the private sector has been more efficient and effective.
