The 2008 Global Development Marketplace, a competitive small-grants competition which built upon the themes of the World Development Report 2008: Agriculture for Development, culminated in the announcement of 22 winners on September 26, 2008. This year's competition received over 1,700 proposals from more than 100 countries. 100 finalists were chosen during an extensive assessment by over 200 development specialists both from within and outside the World Bank in June of 2008. Of these 100 finalists, the 22 winners were selected. The winners represent 16 countries, with the majority from Latin America and the Caribbean (8 projects), followed by East Asia and Pacific (6 projects), sub-Saharan Africa (5 projects) and South Asia (3 projects).
