Agriculture and Rural Development Events at the United Nations Climate Negotiations (UNFCCC COP-15) in Copenhagen

ardAgriculture and Rural Development Day was held on December 12, 2009 in Copenhagen, coinciding with the United Nations Climate Negotiations (UNFCCC COP-15) with a focus on “The road after Copenhagen: priority strategies and actions for ensuring food security and rural development in the face of climate change.” The event brought together policy makers and negotiators, rural development practitioners, producers, civil society and the agricultural and climate change scientific community to highlight the importance of agriculture in climate change and to identify the ‘no-regret’ priorities for agriculture and food security. Kathy Sierra opened the Agriculture and Rural Development Day in her capacity as the Chair of the CGIAR and the Vice President of the Sustainable Development Network at the World Bank.

Beyond Copenhagen: Agriculture and Forestry are Part of the Solution
Hosted by the International Federation of Agricultural Producers, leaders of international development and research for development organizations discussed the outcomes from recent events focused on the challenges for agriculture and food security as a result of climate change, and the need to shape the global agenda for forests and agriculture in a warming world. Mark Cackler, Sector Manager - Agriculture and Rural Development department at the World Bank moderated the discussion.

ardForest Day - December 13, 2009
The Center for International Forestry Research, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and the Government of Denmark hosted Forest Day to ensure forests are high on the agenda for future climate outcomes, and to pave the way forward in making these outcomes work beyond Copenhagen. Sir Nicholas Stern of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change spoke at the afternoon session on global views at the Forest Day.
