In recent years, as the risks faced by the agricultural sector have grown, interest in effective risk management approaches has also risen. While there has been a surge of organizations involved in agricultural risk management, platforms to support the sharing of knowledge and experience have been scarce.
To meet this demand, the Agricultural Risk Management Team has developed a network and online knowledge management platform (www.AgRiskManagementForum.org) for the emerging Forum for Agricultural Risk Management in Development (FARMD). FARMD aims to catalyze dialogue, networking, and partnerships among practitioners and users of agricultural risk management tools and approaches. The Forum comprises development organizations; private agribusiness and financial institutions; academic, research, and training organizations; NGOs; regional organizations; and other relevant international organizations.
The online platform fosters real-time, dynamic exchange on topics relevant to agricultural risk management practitioners, and offers information, tools, and resources that promote experience and knowledge sharing in this field. This is complemented by off-line ag-risk management activities to be undertaken by the Forum.
The Forum’s inaugural workshop convened in 2009 and brought together diverse stakeholders from development agencies, commercial organizations, and regional organizations interested in agricultural risk management. This group helped develop the building blocks for FARMD, its framework, and the set of activities to be pursued.
Funding for FARMD comes from the Swiss Government’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Agricultural Risk Management Team has facilitated the creation of the online platform for FARMD and is housing a small team to oversee its development and initial growth.
