The engagement of interested stakeholders – especially NGOs and the private sector – is essential to ENA FLEG process. For the Ministerial Conference, IUCN facilitated an NGO self-selection process that nominated 12 local and 12 international NGOs to participate in the Conference. Their participation was supported by funding from donor governments. The ENA FLEG secretariat facilitated the selection process of the private sector ensuring regional representations and a balanced proportion of different types of small, medium and large associations/companies.
Private sector preparations for the Ministerial Conference included a workshop convened by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in September 2005, as well as a The Forests Dialogue (TFD) organized multi-stakeholder meeting in November 2005. See box on related initiatives and participation for further information. National-level processes also allowed for the inclusion of views from a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society, non-governmental organizations, and private sector.
