Illegal logging to harvest species such us Mahogany, Virola, and Spanish Cedar have resulted in the degradation of approximately two million hectares of tropical forest per year in the Amazon basin. Some countries have expressed strong interest in developing similar forest law and governance processes in the Latin America and Caribbean region, and scoping work is underway to assess the level of interest in pursuing such an initiative.
