Pest Management tools and Methods

The IPM approach emphasizes the need to reduce the heavy reliance on routine use of chemical pesticides by promoting a system that relies on identifying the pest, assessing pest abundance and understanding the ecological factors that are likely to influence pest infestations.

An understanding of all these factors is key to the proper choice of management tactics and strategies.   Pesticides may remain the only viable option, but their applications should be made only when pest (insect, weeds and disease) populations reach to levels that cause economic damage.

IPM programs use a variety of control tools and methods in a combined manner to reduce the status of pests to tolerable levels while maintaining a quality environment and minimizing risk to non-target species. In this section we focus on the various policy and technical tools that could be used to promote IPM adoption.
