The World Bank has increased its investment in ECD programs from approximately US$ 126 million in 1990 to a total of about US$ 1.6 billion in 2006. The World Bank has financed more than 74 projects in about 47 countries. Of these, 15 have been freestanding operations and the rest have been human development projects with an ECD component. Through the Bank's support, many innovations in the design and implementation of ECD projects have been introduced across the regions.

Not all of the Bank's support is through lending. The Bank also serves as a center for knowledge sharing, capacity building, technical assistance, and advice on policies that affect young children.
