The Real Exchange Rate: Theory and Application to Tanzania

Description: The real exchange rate occupies a very important role as the principal equilibrating variable of a country’s balance of payments, and as such it is responsible for short- and long-term effects on growth. This two-part lecture will cover the RER theory in its first part followed by an application to Tanzania in its second part. In this application, particular attention shall be paid to the relationship between terms of trade movements, the government’s trade liberalization efforts, and aid inflows and the RER.
