Making Poverty the Story: Time to Involve Media in Poverty Reduction

Washington, DC, March 11, 2008

In a seminar hosted by CommGAP on March 11, 2008, Jon Barnes, head of the Globalisation Program at Panos London, presented the findings of the report Making Poverty the Story.

This study is based on the results of a 2005-2007 Panos project carried out in six countries in Africa and South Asia. The study asserts that good journalism can shape public opinion and act as a lever for policy change. It can raise awkward questions and champion the views of poor people. At a time when the world is struggling to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, the report argues that many international donors have yet to appreciate that a vibrant independent media sector is essential for development and needs support.
