Education Lending in FY 2003

World Bank fiscal year (FY) start on July 1 of the previous calendar year, ie, FY03 started on July 1, 2002 and lasted through June 30, 2003.

Education Lending Brief 
Promoting education is central to the Bank's mission of poverty reduction. The World Bank has been helping advance education in developing countries since 1963 and remains today the world's single largest provider of external funding for education. 

Overview of FY 2003 Education Lending 
As of March 2004, 87 low- and middle-income countries were implementing a total of 154 World Bank-financed projects, worth about $9.4 billion. Lending for education reached a near-record volume of $2.3 billion in the Fiscal Year 2003 (12 month period ending June 30, 2003).

Education's share of total Bank lending was nearly 13%--the highest since the Bank first began lending for education in 1963. About half the year's 26 projects supported primary education with 15 projects supporting more than one level of education. In terms of lending volume, primary education accounted for the largest share of the total lending amount (33%), followed by general education (25%)-much of which also supports primary education.

The Latin America and Caribbean region continued for the third year to account for the largest share of total education lending ($786 million). The second highest share of education lending went to Africa, home to the largest number of countries not on track to meet the 2015 goal of universal primary completion. The majority of Africa's new projects support primary education and education sector reform.
