EdStats, short for Education Statistics, is a comprehensive education statistics database developed by the World Bank’s Education Group of the Human Development Network in collaboration with Development Data Group in the Development Economics Vice-Presidency. It compiles data from a variety of national and international sources and provides information on key education topics.
Features of EdStats include:
- Edstats Query: This module allows for flexible retrieval of available data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS). It presents a large number of indicators for more than 200 countries since 1970. Indicators are organized by category, including Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Expenditure, Labor, Population, Teachers and Other. Data can be easily retrieved and resorted and are intended to be used in comparative, aggregate, as well as a single country analysis. Data can be exported into an excel spreadsheet.
- Online Education Atlas: This module presents thematic maps for selected education indicators.
- Country Profiles: In this module you will find different reports for a selected country. Various datasets are available such as Education at a Glance, Gender Disaggregated Data Profiles, Country at a Glance, School Age Population, and Education Trends and Comparisons.
- Selected Topics: This module includes the State of Education, which provides a global perspective on the progress made on access and quality issues. This section also presents data on diverse topics including the Education Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Out of School Children, Education Outcomes, Education in Emergencies ,Education and Disability, and Private Education Expenditure. The data is from a wide variety of sources including The World Bank, UIS, UNESCO, UNHCR, and OECD.
- Household Surveys: The Household Surveys module presents education data from a number of household surveys including Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS), and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). Also included is a database on household surveys created by the International Household Survey Network, and links to the LSMS and MICS websites.
- Additional Resources: This Module includes variety sources: On the Database you can download the databases used on EdStats into the following formats: Excel, SPSS, and STATA. On the Publications you will find a reservoir of education statistics related publications. The Statistical Websites and Recommended Links include a list of suggested websites that contain relevant education statistics information. The Archived Data contains historical databases and information that is not updated.
- Quick Links: The EdStats Quick Links generates a customized webpage that connects you to EdStats resources on a specific area of interest. Users can search the site by country, key topic, or education level. Once a user selects an area of interest, the search function will generate a list of relevant links contained within the EdStats website. This will include a link to the EdStats Data Retrieval System, Country Profiles, Household surveys module, as well as links included in Additional Resources section where applicable.
