Priority Areas

Education is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality and for laying the basis for sustained economic growth.  The Bank’s strategic thrust is to help countries integrate education into national economic strategies and policies, to provide support in attaining the Education for All (EFA) goals by 2015 and to strengthen education for the knowledge economy by integrating education into a country-wide perspective—adopting a system-wide, holistic education approach and focusing on education results.

To that end, Bank assistance for education supports two broad themes: Education for All (EFA), focused on the 1990 global commitment to give “every citizen in every society” the opportunity for a basic education, and Education for the Knowledge Economy, which recognizes the importance of post-basic education and lifelong learning for survival in today’s dynamic, knowledge-driven world.

Additionally, key sector priorities that cut across both themes include: Economics of Education - which is at the heart of informed decision-making and policy reform; School Health and HIV/AIDS - which is central to realizing strong outcomes at all levels of the education system and Science, Technology and Innovation-which enhances a country's capacity to import and use existing technology and improve human capital and education.  These priorities underscore the critical need to integrate education into a country’s overall development (macroeconomic and cross-sectoral) context.
