This web site provides background information, speaker biographies, and presentations related to the international seminar entitled "Growth Strategies for Secondary Education in Asia," which was held September 19 -21 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This seminar was the result of a collaborative effort among the East Asia and Pacific Region, the South Asia Region, World Bank Institute (WBI), and Human Development Network (HDNED). Donor partners for the event were the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, the Asian Development Bank, Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), and UNESCO. The event was attended by delegations from 12 East Asian and South Asian countries, comprising education sector policy makers and senior government officials. The following countries were represented: (i) Bangladesh; (ii) Cambodia; (iii) China; (iv) East Timor; (v) India; (vi) Indonesia; (vii) Lao PDR; (viii) Malaysia; (ix) Mongolia; (x) Philippines; (xi) Thailand; and (xii) Vietnam. The main objectives of the seminar were: (i) to disseminate the World Bank’s newly published policy report on secondary education “Expanding Opportunities and Building Competencies for Young People: A New Agenda for Secondary Education"; and (ii) to discuss policy options and exchange promising approaches for secondary education reform. The seminar focused on critical concerns of policymakers in the regions: new trends in secondary education, balance between general and vocational education, curriculum reform, teacher preparation and professional development, use of ICT, labor market demand and competencies, and financing the provision of secondary education through public-private partnerships.
