Haiti's growth prospects are tightly linked to the country's ability to make significant improvements in the development of its human capital. Haiti's education sector faces tremendous challenges post-earthquake, including a diminished capacity to respond. Haiti faces challenges of both supply and demand in education. These challenges are compounded in rural areas by greater poverty and difficulty in access to schools. Even when schools are accessible, the quality of the education offered is uneven, and often very low. The World Bank, together with other donors, is helping to co-finance the implementation of Haiti's national strategy for rebuilding the education system.

During this session, Bob Prouty, Head of the Global Partnership for Education will discuss 'Quality Education in Fragile States', looking at both the demand-side and supply side challenges. His Excellency the Minister of Education of Haiti M. Reginald Paul and Mr. Patrick Ramanantoanina of the World Bank will provide an overview of the demand-side approach currently financed in Haiti by the World Bank together with other partners. Mr. Jeff Puryear of PREAL & the Inter-American Dialogue will offer some comments and concluding remarks.
