A Renewed Agenda for Energy Speakers and Moderators | External Participants | Energy Week 2003: Lessons Learned Paper Energy Week, the annual gathering of World Bank energy staff, took take place from February 24 to 27, 2003. It provided a forum for energy staff to network with each other and with a broad spectrum of professionals from outside the institution. Central to the discussions this year were issues raised by: - the decreasing role of foreign private investment in developing countries, with particular focus on improving the enabling environment and governance issues; and
- the challenges in the energy sector in light of the World Summit on Sustainable Development Agenda - increasing access to modern forms of energy for the poor, improving the targeting of subsidies and increasing the role of renewable energy.
Energy Week 2003 addressed these two themes through a combination of plenary sessions on February 24 and 25, three workshops on February 26 and 27 complementing these themes: Energy Forum, during which the above issues were explored in a series of presentations with question-and-answer periods after each. A Workshop on Energy Markets a one-day workshop consisting of presentations and case studies, providing practical guidance on approaches to implementing policies for reforming electric power sectors.Energy and Poverty Workshop, a one-day interactive workshop consisting of presentations and case studies to help staff mainstream poverty reduction in Bank work. The workshop was designed to give staff practical guidance and help them to better advise clients on the design of policy interventions and investments that influence poverty. Biomass Energy Workshop during which participants were walked through the "Biomass Continuum", i.e. from traditional applications all the way to fuel cell technology. Their impact and relevance to poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability were addressed.
