The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded in 1946 with a focus on the international development of standards that cover products, services and practices.
The majority of ISO standards are product-specific, however, ISO has also developed a number of generic management system standards that include the quality management standard ISO 9000, environmental management standard ISO 14000 and also include the ISO/IEC 17025 that was developed jointly with the IEC to approve the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
