| Background | Building upon the United Nations’ declaration of 2012 as the “Year of Sustainable Energy for All”, the overall theme of Energy Days 2012 is “Many Paths for Sustainable Energy”. The objective of Energy Days 2012 will be to highlight challenges, discuss trade-offs and explore solutions that will help the global development community and private sector partners to achieve universal access to modern energy services – including electricity and clean cooking and heating fuels. This goal is balanced against the needs of the climate and avoiding a lock-in onto an unsustainable high-carbon development path, and ensuring financial sustainability of the process as the global economy recovers from the worst recession since the Great Depression.
The conference will be held at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC, on February 23-24, 2012, as part of the two week-long Sustainable Development Network Forum. During Energy Days 2012, we hope to debate and discuss the path forward to universal access to modern energy, while ensuring progress on global targets for renewable energy and energy efficiency. Joining the staff of the World Bank Group and offering insights will be major energy industry representatives, senior donor and developing country officials, and leading thinkers and stakeholders of the energy sector.
Training on energy-related topics will be available for staff of the World Bank Group the following week, on February 29-March 1, 2012. The links below take you to the events for each day; more information, including registration information and information for visitors is forthcoming.
