Overview

The World Bank Group has recently completed the first round of consultations to gather input for a new energy sector strategy, which is expected to be completed in mid-2011.

The consultations were part of a broad effort to gather input from a wide range of perspectives on how the World Bank Group can best help developing countries improve the access and reliability of energy while shifting to a more environmentally sustainable energy development path.

In addition to collecting comments online, the World Bank Group held a series of meetings, videoconferences, and other events in the first phase of consultations from January 2010 to July 2010. The feedback collected is now being reviewed in order to draft a new energy strategy. This feedback will shortly be available on this Website for viewing.

An approach paper has been posted online for public review in multiple languages together with background papers in English.

“Without access to reliable energy supplies—that is, without meeting the basic energy needs of all people—environmentally sustainable energy development will be difficult, and without attention to environmental sustainability, meeting basic needs of future generations will be a daunting task. Helping countries provide efficient, affordable, reliable and clean energy is key to sustainable development and poverty reduction and, therefore, key to the mission of the World Bank.”

Sustainable Development, The World Bank
