Giving Women Economic Opportunity: World Bank Initiatives 
The World Bank assists member countries 'to reduce poverty and enhance economic growth, human well-being, and development effectiveness by addressing the gender disparities and inequalities that are barriers to development, and by assisting member countries in formulating and implementing their gender and development goals'. (Operational Policy 4.20 The Bank's Rural Development Strategy recognizes the importance of integrating gender into all aspects of rural development as a cross-cutting issue. Women represent the majority of the rural poor (up to 70%) and play a major role in the survival strategies and the economy of poor rural households.
