Beijing + 10: World Bank Contributions to the Ten-Year Review and Appraisal of the Beijing Platform for Action

Introduction

Ten years after the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will dedicate its 49th Session from February 28th – March 11,th 2005, to assessing the world’s progress in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome document of the five-year review that took place during the 23rd Special Session of the General Assembly (more commonly referred to as Beijing + 5).

The meeting will focus on national-level implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action through interactive dialogue and an exchange of good practices. According to the UN, the outcome of this review will be an important contribution to the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Millennium review in September 2005.  During the two-week session, there will be a high-level plenary meeting, seven high-level panels on issues related to gender equality, and a celebration of International Women's Day. Participants will include the United Nations Member States, UN agencies, international financial institutions, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs). The World Bank
is fully committed to working together with its partners to promote gender equality and empower women and will be participating actively in the conference and the events leading up to it.
