The workshop was organized in response to two challenges facing gender issues as identified in the World Bank’s recent report entitled “Gender Equality in East Asia: Progress, and the Challenges of Economic Growth and Political Change.”   The first issue is that while economic growth and market integration have contributed to rapid improvements in the situation of women in the East Asia region, there are new gender challenges that must be addressed.  The second is for stakeholders from six countries in the region who are engaged in gender-related activities to acquire new skills and experiences to better address these challenges through dialogue on economic policy. The workshop covered topics of gender equality and: economic growth, labor market changes in East Asia, women's economic participation in the region, social protection for migrant workers, public expenditure, benefit incidence analysis, and trade liberalization. 50 participants, mostly government officials from regional Ministries of Finance, Planning, Social Work, and Women’s Affairs, attended the workshop.
