From October 5-8, 2008, over 200 women from throughout Latin America and the Caribbean convened at the Vital Voices Summit of the Americas in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Within this broader initiative, the World Bank Gender Action Plan sponsored the “Leveling the Playing Field “ session, in which some of the region’s  most successful women entrepreneurs and leading legal advocates collectively outlined and discussed overarching legal, regulatory and other obstacles to women’s economic and social progress across the region

Participants of the "Leveling the Playing Field" devised a collaborative framework, in which their respective institutions could contribute to women's economic and social progress.  Teresa Genta-Fons, Maria Beatriz Orlando and Amanda Natalie Ellis, of the World Bank, committed to facilitating further research and sex-disaggregated data on women's economic and business issues, as well as using their platform to encourage more policies that contribute to women's economic access

Entrepreneurs Ximena Ramirez and Maria Claudia Nogales discuss the challenges facing women entrepreneurs in Nicaragua and Bolivia, respectively.

During the conference, the Gender Action Plan Team interviewed 10 women entrepreneurs on their trajectories and their experiences within their country's regulatory environment. These interviews will be applied towards case studies within "Women Doing Business in Latin America," due in February 2009.
