Gender in MENA Projects: Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment
The World Bank’s Middle East and North Africa Social and Economic Group (MNSED), in collaboration with the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research (CAWTAR), the Gender and Development Group, World Bank, and the League of Arab States, held a training workshop May 21-23, 2009, in Tunis, Tunisia.
In line with the World Bank Gender Action Plan (GAP), and its links to women’s economic empowerment and the Millennium Development Goals, the objective of this training workshop was to provide knowledge and skills to Bank staff, their main counterparts, and stakeholders working on gender issues in MENA, to integrate gender in projects in a way that supports monitoring and evaluation of women’s economic empowerment. This training also provided participants from international organizations as well as stakeholders from government and civil society the opportunity to network and share knowledge and experiences on key gender issues and successful initiatives in the MENA region and elsewhere.
To achieve the objectives, the workshop covered several areas: 1) development and gender work in MENA 2) women’s economic empowerment and the Gender Action Plan, 3) level of gender integration in MENA projects, 4) best practices and lessons learned from gender mainstreaming in GAP-related projects, 5) analytical and operational tools for gender integration, and 6) the development of a M&E plan with the appropriate gender indicators for individual projects.
