The Gender and Development unit at the World Bank, together with the Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO) and the Center for the Study of Civil Wars (CSCW) organized a research seminar on Gender and Conflict in Oslo on December 10, 2011. The seminar presented the results of a World Bank research program - funded by Norway - to study the gender-differentiated impacts of violent conflict using both demographic and gender lense. With a view to inform policy in conflict and post-conflict states, the program aims to identify gender-aware interventions that strengthen post-conflict recovery and development efforts in the areas of labor markets, education and health. Earlier research has revealed that the demographic consequences of violent conflict are both large and also highly gendered.
The empirical studies presented at the seminar focus on the impact of violent conflict on marriage and fertility, human capital, labor force participation and economic empowerment, and gender roles and relations in six countries - Burundi, Colombia, East-Timor, Rwanda, Nepal, and Tajikistan.Â
