Launching of the World Bank’s World Development Report 2012: Gender Equality and Development

The World Bank will be launching its new World Development Report 2012 on Gender Equality and Development, one of the World Bank’s most important annual publications in Vietnam.

Every year, the World Development Report focuses on a new theme of importance to economic and social development, and this year, the theme is gender equality and development.

What is the role of gender equality in development in general and economic development in particular? How can greater gender equality enhance productivity and make the country more prosperous? These will be presented at the launching event.

The Report also focuses on four priority areas for policy going forward: (i) reducing excess female mortality and closing education gaps where they remain, (ii) improving access to economic opportunities for women (iii) increasing women's voice and agency in the household and in society and (iv) limiting the reproduction of gender inequality across generations.

Initial findings from the East Asia Pacific companion volume the WDR 2012, “Towards Gender Equality in East Asia and the Pacific”, will also be presented at the session.
