Logistics and supply of drugs are the essential interface between procurement on the one side and delivery at a point of service on the other. Insufficient logistics systems are a major reason for lack of access to medicines and waste of resources.

Factors that influence the performance of a logistics and supply system for medicines are

  • Quality of staff and incentive structure
  • Storage facilities
  • Transportation and delivery
  • Simplicity of chain (number of steps between procurement and dispensing)
  • Inventory management systems and tools
  • Bottom-up planning tools and information systems
  • Quality control system
  • Performance monitoring and management accountability
