
CHAIR: Phil Hay Communications Advisor, Human Development Network, World Bank Mr. Hay is the communications adviser for the World Bank's Human Development Network, which mobilizes innovative research and proven policies to help expand people's access to better health, education, and social protection services in low- and middle-income countries. Prior to joining the Bank, Mr. Hay was a special correspondent, and also a U.S. West Coast correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation, and a frequent writer and commentator on development and international relations. AUTHOR: Andreas Seiter Senior Health Specialist, Human Development Network, World Bank Mr. Seiter is a senior health specialist at the World Bank’s Health, Nutrition, and Population Anchor. A medical doctor trained in Germany, Seiter worked for 18 years in the pharmaceutical industry before joining the World Bank in 2004. He is responsible for the World Bank’s analytical and advisory work in all areas of pharmaceutical policy, such as regulation, governance, quality assurance, financing, purchasing, supply chain, and rational use. He has worked with World Bank teams, policy makers, and experts in several World Bank client countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and South Asia. PANELISTS: Cristian Baeza Sector Director, Health, Nutrition and Population, Human Development Network, World Bank Mr. Baeza is the Director for Health, Nutrition and Population at the World Bank. Dr. Baeza’s work has focused on Health Systems Financing and Insurance, on Health Systems Reform and their contribution to health care access, household income protection, poverty alleviation, and country competitiveness and macroeconomic performance. Immediately prior to this appointment, Mr. Baeza was a Partner in McKinsey and Company leading the Global Health Systems Financing group (Health Systems Policy, Financing, and Health Insurance) with particular focus on the design and implementation of national health financing systems, insurance financing arrangements, and the management of their fiscal, labor and macroeconomic implications. Jeff Sturchio Chief Executive Officer, Global Health Council Former President, The Merck Company Foundation Dr. Jeffrey Sturchiop is President and CEO of the Global Health Council, and a former President of The Merck Company Foundation. Mr. Sturchio previously served as Chairman of the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA). CCA, whose companies represent some 85 percent of total U.S. private sector investment in Africa, works closely with governments, multilateral organizations, NGOs, and business to improve the investment climate in Africa. Mr. Sturchio retired in 2008 from Merck & Co., Inc., where he was Vice President, Corporate Responsibility. In that position, he managed a portfolio of activities including Merck’s corporate philanthropy (totaling $828 million in cash and product donations in 2007); the Merck Childhood Asthma Network; global health partnerships, including the Merck Mectizan Donation Program, which has donated 1 billion drug treatments to combat river blindness and lymphatic filariasis; and global HIV/AIDS access programs, aimed at building capacity and ensuring HIV-infected populations in developing countries had access to care and treatment.
