Breastfeeding - Quantifying the Benefits of Breast-feeding: A Summary of the Evidence (Linkages and PAHO). This annotated bibliography of more than 180 studies reviews the scientific and epidemiological evidence of breastfeeding's effect on morbidity, infant mortality, intellectual and motor development, chronic disease, and maternal health. The publication also summarizes studies on the economic benefits of breastfeeding. The evidence of breastfeeding's impact on health outcomes supports the World Health Assembly's Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding (May 2002) and is particularly important at a time when concerns about HIV transmission through breastmilk threaten to erode support for breastfeeding programs.
