The Contribution of High Health Care Costs to Impoverishment

Adam Wagstaff, Naoko Watanabe, and Eddy van Doorslaer, September 7, 2000.

The seminar presented a project entitled "Impoverishment, Insurance, and Health Care Payments." The opening presentation, by Adam Wagstaff, covered the project’s three principal dimensions: development of an analytical approach for determining the poverty impact of health care payments; application of the approach to household data sets from nine developing countries, in order to produce empirical estimates of the impact’s magnitude; and examination of how effectively health insurance had protected people from the impact.
