Poor-Rich Differences in Health, Nutrition, Population Status and Service Use within Developing Countries: Introduction to a New Source of Information for Project Development and Economic Sector Work

Davidson Gwatkin, Rohini Pande, Fadia Saadah, Mariam Schneidman, and Abdo Yazbeck, May 16, 2000

The seminar was held in order to introduce the World Bank’s new country health/nutrition/population (HNP) and poverty information sheets to HNP staff from the Bank and other agencies. The sheets, which are available for approximately forty-five developing countries, feature tabulations of Demographic and Health Survey data that present estimates for approximately thirty health status and service use indicators in each economically-defined population quintile. Davidson Gwatkin and Rohini Pande explained what the sheets were and how they had been constructed. Fadia Saadah, Mariam Schneidman, and Abdo Yazbeck described how they had used information from the sheets in their Bank work in the East Asia/Pacific Region, in Haiti, and in India.
