What Do the Poor Have to Say about Health, Nutrition, and Population?

Deepa Narayan, February 1, 2000

Dr. Deepa Narayan is leader of a World Bank team conducting a set of studies entitled "Consultations with the Poor." The consultations, being prepared to inform the Bank’s 2000/01 World Development Report on poverty, used participatory methods to determine what problems the poor consider most important, and what they think about the institutions that provide them with services to deal with those problems. The consultations included both a synthesis of previous work, and a newly-commissioned set of studies that interviewed over 20,000 poor men and women in twenty-three. The seminar covered the consultations’ findings about the views of the poor with respect to health, nutrition, and population.
