The Health of the Poor: Global and Country-Specific Estimates for Selected Indicators

Dean Jamison, December 16, 1997

Dean Jamison reported on his and Christopher Spohr’s progress toward developing a technique to estimate the levels of health status and service use among people below and above the poverty line in developing countries. The technique used country-level data concerning the national average value for the health indicators of interest, and the percentage of the national population below the poverty line. Given these two figures for a set of countries, the technique made it possible to estimate the value of the health indicator for the poor and non-poor in each country.

(The initial estimates produced by applying this technique have subsequently been published, in annex table 7 of World Health Organization, The World Health Report 1999: Making A Difference, pp. 114-5.)
